Why I Practice Yoga

Lately, I’ve been asking my self, ‘why do I practice yoga and what is driving me to learn more and even entertain beginning a teacher training?’
When I first started my practice four years ago, I had hoped to relieve stress and regain that childhood flexibility. Fair enough, but the reasons I now practice don’t seem as straightforward as they once were. After examining my inner motives, I found nothing about loosening hamstrings in the dialogue. It became apparent that I continued to practice for reasons that I was totally unaware of – finding out my purpose, who I was, the journey laid before me.
At the onset, it seemed natural to assume that my practice and life were completely separate and that an hour on the mat was just one hour, but as my practice strengthened and my understanding broadened, yoga and life became one.
While one person’s practice may consist of meditating in some elusive cave, mine is woven within my daily routine of work, meditation, cooking, walking my dog, and staying balanced – that’s the journey I’m taking through my practice. However, I realize that this practice is such a powerful life-enhancing tool that I want to deepen my knowledge and share this gift with others. Yoga is teaching me to be whole (the journey continues) and the serenity found in those couple hours each day has become threaded throughout my very existence. Perhaps a quest of knowledge and guided training will allow me to open that doorway for others who are on their own unique journey in discovering their life, self and perhaps, yoga, purpose.
